RJA #15: Reflection

During the course of the semester I learned how to use more Internet search engines like Bing and Redz. I also learned many things about my topic on our research topic. I learned more about the pine beetle infestation in Colorado. That includes what were doing to help prevent the spread such as control burning, clear cutting, chemical spraying and more. I will be able to apply this to my major in the future because I will be helping with problems in nature like the pine beetle infestation. Another thing I learned during this class is how to use a blog.

RJA #14a: Application Project Progress Report

#1.
#2. I have completed almost half of my story for my project. I have written about the introduction to the story, including the way to Pearl Lake and what it means to me. I have completed some of the body paragraphs explaining what my family is doing at Pearl Lake. This includes what some of the traditional things we do. Not only this but the problem is introduced about the Pine Beetle Infestation, and how it has taken over the campgrounds.
#3. I still need to go over what I plan to do with the rest of my paper. This includes going more in depth of what the problem is. After that i need to add the solutions to the problem in a creative way throughout my story. Then there still needs to be something like a conclusion to wrap everything up.

RJA #13c: Application Project Example

. unfortunately I can't find any short stories with any genre anywhere close to my own. My genre includes a family trying to go camping, and while doing so trying to save the campsite and the pine beetle trees.

RJA #13b: Application Project Plan

.The Plan
The plan for my application project is to write a short story. The short story will be about a family going camping to one of their favorite spots, where they have been going for many years. The only problem is that throughout all those years the campgrounds, and the area around it was perfect except this time. Upon arrival they will see the devastation of the pine beetle, and what it has done to their paradise. Then the family shall go on an adventure trying to save their campground, and informing people of the problem.

RJA #12b: Field Research Report

* Field Reasearch
I conducted a survey asking random people all over Colorado about the Pine Beetle Infestation.
These questions included...
.Do you know what the Pine Beetle Infestation is?
.Did you know that there is an infestation of Pine Beetles in Colorado?
.If you did know that there was an infestation in Colorado, do you know the extent of the problem?
.If you came accross a tree thatwas infescted with the Pine Beetle would you know what to do?
During my field research project I found out that many people don't understand what the Pine Beetle Infestation is.
After asking fifty different individuals these questions, I came to a shocking realization of how bad the awareness is of the Pine Beetle Infestation. Out of fifty individuals, thirty of them couldn’t even get passed the first question. That is sixty percent of the group that had no idea what the Pine Beetle was or knew anything about the problem. Out of the remaining fourty percent, thirty percent of these individuals knew that there was a big problem with the Pine Beetle Infestation, but didn’t know what to do if there was an infected tree. Only five (10%) of the fifty individuals had a clear understanding of what the Pine Beetle Infestation was, and knew what to do if they had come across an infected area. This is truly alarming because nothing can be done to save the Pine Trees if no one knows what it is.

RJA #10c: Ideas for the Application Project

#1. Journal Entry: Division of Wildlife Officer, writing about conditions on the Pine Beetle Epidemic.
#2. Short Story: Story on how someone goes on a backpacking trip in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, encountering the Pine Beetle Epidemic.
#3. News Article: Reporting damages of the Epidemic, images and etc..
#4. Editorial: More volunteer work needs to be done to ensure that there will be Pine Trees in the Rockies in our children's lifetime.

RJA #10b: Progress Report for Argumentative Paper

#1.
I have accomplished writing a little over three pages of my essay so far. Instead of starting my writing with an introduction, I jumped into writing my body paragraphs for the essay. I have a couple paragraphs which are a little over two pages long. These two paragraphs describe what the Pine Beetle is and what they are doing to the trees. It also includes everything on how the Beetles destroy trees, including their life cycle.
#2
There are still many things that need to be done.
. Introduction
. More info about the Pine Beetle
. Information about the Pine Trees
. introduce the problem
. go over the damages
. solutions
.conclusion

RJA #8a: Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary

But, permethrin is no cakewalk. It can be injurious to cats and birds. [While in a different category of chemicals thought to be safer for the nervous system, less is known about the long term effects].
So it’s important to look at the cumulative effect over several seasons. While permethrin has a lower labeled rate of application, you have to apply it every season. Many arborists use carbaryl because you only need to apply it once every other season, giving more flexibility.
One Victoria, BC based arborist wrote, “The best bet is to go with carbaryl; in theory one ‘proper’ application of Sevin XLR+ should be good for two years. Spray the even number trees one year and the odd numbered the next. You can spray early or late in the day when the honey bees are in their hives and it is effective. ”
.This quotation, "While in a different category of chemicals thought to be safer for the nervous system, less is known about the long term effects", is very important, because while trying to save trees from being destroyed there can be other damages being made. It's a given law that for every positive, there is a negative and that's what can be expected while using these chemicals. The positive side from spraying chemicals is that were potentially saving the pine beetle tree's from being damaged by the pine beetle. The negative effect from spraying is that it can cause damage to other animals in the area.
.Paraphrase: Carbaryl may be good to use to help prevent damage being caused to trees, but it can also cause damage to to other animals like birds and cats. The other bonus to spraying is the fact that there only needs to be one application to an area once every two years. To avoid damage to insects and other animals, spraying at certain times during the day and nights can be very helpful.
.Summarizing: Carbaryl is very useful because it prevents trees from being damaged. One of the side effects from using this spray is that it can hurt other animals and insects. Another plus from spraying is that it only needs to be applied once every two years.

RJA #6c: Field Research Options

Option #1
. The first option that i have for field research is to go out into the Colorado Rockies, and conduct a percentage of how many trees have been killed by the pine beetle. I could list the number of healthy trees, to infected trees, dying trees, and dead ones.
.Another option is to attend a Colorado Division of Wildlife meeting. There are meetings confronting the issue, and I can learn more about the topic, because they are experts in the field ,and see Pine Beetle devastation first hand.
.The next option is to conduct a survey. This survey would target all people of age, and gender to see how much they know about my topic. Including what it is, how serious the situation is, how to prevent spreading of the disease etc..

RJA #2b: Research Topic

. Ecological Restoration
Pine Beetle Infestation in Colorado.
Lack of Awareness and Resolution

Ecological Restoration is the primary job that I would like to have one day. I chose Ecological Restoration and the continuing Pine Beetle Infestation in Colorado because this issue literally effects everyone, and everything directly, or indirectly. I also chose this topic because being in the outdoors is my true passion, and it's what I thrive off of. I love to help the environment, including all of the species of animals, and plants in any way that I can. Growing up I knew that my dream job, or career would include the Environment being my office.
Ecological Restoration is where people "restore" the environment. The Pine Beetle Epidemic in Colorado is being called one of the biggest issues in the West. Pine Beetles are rapidly killing off thousands upon thousands of Pine trees at a time. The restoration part of this comes in and tries to slow down this growing problem ,and restore damaged trees or replace dead ones with new baby trees. Not only can you restore the environment around you, but are protecting and preserving it as well. The growing problem is the lack of awareness, and the lack of support needed to help resolve this problem.
I understand what the topic is, and the general idea of what ill be doing, but only to an extent. I would like to stop scratching the surface of this issue, and dig deep into it to help resolve the Pine Beetle issue, and lack of awareness. I would like to learn how I can get more involved by volunteering, or actually finding a job where I can help the environment, and help resolve this issue.
